Final Report
International Symposium on Quantum Fluids and Solids QFS 2000
University of Minnesota, June 6-11, 2000
QFS 2000 drew approximately
210 participants from all over the world, including two Nobel laureates. A
sizable number of the particpants were graduate students and young research
associates. Contributions to the program consisted of invited talks and unsolicited
contributions. Some of the latter contributions were selected for oral presentation,
but most of them were presented as posters. All of the contributors were invited
to submit manuscripts for the proceedings of the symposium, and slightly fewer
than half of the contributors did in fact submit such manuscripts.
The organizers believe that the
symposium went well and that the participants found the conference to be stimulating
and rewarding as well as enjoyable. Both the oral and the poster sessions
were very well attended, and the latter were
characterized by a great deal of discussion. Perhaps the high point of the
symposium was a spirited discussion in a special session during the last evening
of the conference of some recent and controversial work by Humphrey Maris
of
Brown University.
Outside Organizations Supporting the Symposium
In addition to generous financial
support from within the University, the symposium received financial support
from the National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration
via the Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
and from the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. In addition,
the symposium was sponsored by the latter two organizations as well as endorsed
by the American Physical Society.
Proceedings
The proceedings of the symposium
are scheduled to be published as the regular December 2000 issue of the Journal
of Low Temperature Physics. The manuscripts submitted for the proceedings
were all refereed, largely during the symposium
itself.
