Report on the 28th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2003)

Takaaki Kajita
For the Local Organizing Committee, ICRC2003

Nov. 16, 2000

The 28th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2003) was held in Tsukuba, Japan from July 31 to Aug.7, 2003, under the auspices of International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). This manuscript is the report on this conference.

1. Scientific topics
Whole subjects in the cosmic ray physics were discussed in this conference. The numbers of oral and poster talks based on contributed papers were 492 and 561, respectively. In addition there were 8, 7, and 9 plenary, highlight and rapporteur talks, respectively. The main topics include highest energy cosmic rays and their origin, the measurement of cosmic ray spectra and the discussion on the acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays, measurement of TeV gamma rays and the cosmic ray acceleration, the solar energetic particles and the heliosphere, measurement of solar and atmospheric neutrinos and the neutrino oscillation studies, and gravitational wave.

3. Supports to scientists from Developing countries
Scientists from developing countries were supported in two ways. One was the assignment to the KEK (High Energy Accelerator Research Organization) dormitory rooms. (The KEK campus is in the Tsukuba area and the Local Organizing Committee had arranged a free bus service between KEK and the conference venue.) The price for the KEK dormitory room is about 1,000 yen/night and is much cheaper than that for a hotel room. For some participants, the fee for the KEK dormitory room was also supported. The other was the full or half waiver of the registration fee. The registration fee was 40,000 (20,000) yen for early registration (early student registration). The following table summarizes of the supports to scientists from developing countries.

In addition to the waiver of the registration fee, the Local Organizing Committee has supported the fee for KEK dormitory rooms for 24 participants. The support for the KEK dormitory rooms was 272,530 yen.
Therefore, the total amount of yen used for the supports to scientists from developing countries was 2,172,530 yen.
(Note: The support from IUPAP was 14,500 US dollars, which was 1,685,625 yen.)

5. Invited speakers
In the International Cosmic Ray Conferences, the invited speakers are categorized to plenary, highlight and rapporteur speakers. The plenary speakers summarize the resent progress in the cosmic ray and related scientific fields. The highlight speakers summarize the recent highlights in the cosmic ray research. The rapporteur speakers summarize the discussion during the conference.
