AC.3. International Commission for Acoustics - report to chair 2003
Brief report for the Meeting of the IUPAP Council and Commission Chairs

The International Commission for Acoustics (ICA) held a Board meeting in Paris, France, on 2003 September 6. The major upcoming event for the ICA is the 18th triennial Congress that be held on 2004 April 4-9 in Kyoto, Japan. The deadline for abstract has been set for 2003 September 15. Planning for the technical programme includes four plenary lectures, a number of keynote lecture speakers, and over fifty structured sessions of invited and contributed papers covering all aspects of Acoustics. The General Assembly of the ICA will be held on 2003 September 7 where the new Board will be elected (term 2004-2007). The 19th triennial Congress will be held in Madrid in 2007.
In preparation for the General Assembly in Kyoto, the ICA Treasurer has prepared a summary of the financial situation of AC3. Summarized on page 1 is the payment history of membership dues of the ICA member societies. The number of shares of each member society follows the original IUPAP scale. The unit membership due is currently set at 25 USD. The current financial balance of AC3 is summarized on page 2. The balance consists of a reserve of 24 394 Euros resulting from an initial allocation of 25 000 USD from the Acoustical Society of America that was generated from the 1998 triennial Congress in Seattle. The Commission activities are funded through annual income and the free balance is currently 13 055 USD.
Thus, during the Board in Paris, two applications for sponsorship of symposia were received and approved. These are the 7th International Symposium on Transport Noise and Vibration to be held in St. Petersburg on 2004 June 8-10 and the 9th Meeting of the European Society of Sonochemistry to by held in Badajoz, Spain, on 2004 April 25-30. These are both C-type conferences.
The ICA is announcing that it will give between fifteen and twenty-five travel grants to young scientists (less that 10-15 years of active career), particularly from developing countries, to attend the 18th Congress in Kyoto.
The first ICA Early Career Award (less than 10-15 years of active career) will be awarded during the Kyoto Congress. The Award consists of an honorarium, an Award Certificate and a Medal on the recommendation of the ICA Award Committee.
Finally, ICA Board Members were requested to initiate informal discussion in their respective countries regarding the interest for Union membership within ICSU. Further discussion of this matter is planned during the General Assembly in Kyoto next year.
